Supervision

I provide professional formal external supervision for counsellors and trainee counsellors. Supervision, as outlined by BACP (information sheet S2) has a number of purposes.

  • to assist in the development of the reflective practitioner
  • to support the therapist
  • to maximise the effectiveness of the therapeutic
    relationship
  • to monitor/ safeguard the interests of the client and
  • to maintain ethical standards

I aim to provide a supportive, reflective, creative environment in which you will be able to work effectively towards your supervision needs. Much will depend on the working relationship that we foster together to create a questioning, exploring arena to deepening your undersatnding of your work with clients.

My theoretical counselling background is Integrative/Humanistic and have a good grounding and understanding of Person-Centred approaches to counselling, as well as TA, Gestalt and Psychodynamic. My work is underpinned by a working relational model of Clarkson's five-relationship framework and seven-modes of discourse.

It maybe that you wish to work with a supervisor of a similar counselling orientation to your own or are eager to work with someone who holds different views, each has its advantages and disadvantages. What I aim to provide is a supervision experience that is supportive, challenging, meets the purpose of supervision and for the experience to be enjoyable and invigorating.

I have a working knowledge of the following supervision models: Person-Centred approaches, Carroll's generic model, Inskipp and Proctors functional model, Shohet and Hawkins process seven-eyed model, and Stoltenberg and Delworths developmental model and Page and Woskets cyclical model. I have developed an intergrative relational supervision approach through Clarkson's relationship framework and drawing on the work of Gilbert and Evans in their integrative relational approach to supervision.

If you are just starting out on your supervision journey, all the above may seem a little daunting, take heart, in reality it is much more down to earth and experiential than all the terminology makes it appear. For those who are familar with supervision will know that it can be an exciting and rewarding space to keep your work fresh and safe with clients. Wherever you are on your journey as a therapist I aim to provide a supervision experience that is revevant to your needs.
